The online presence of KFRI Xylarium
The website https://www.xylarium.in is an online platform for the wood samples housed at the Xylarium by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi. The KFRI Xylarium was established in 1979 and has been indexed in the IAWA Index Xylarium 4.1 (2016) - a directory of Institutional Wood Collections from around the World. It has a total accession of 715 specimens, with 572 species representing 320 genera. The samples represented Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, Myanmar, Netherlands, Philippines, Portugal, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom. The dimension of the KFRI Xylarium samples is 10 x 6 x 1 cm for small specimens, and in the case of the large specimens, it is 16 x 10 x 2 cm as per the international standard. In addition to this, samples representing different dimensions are also represented.
KFRI is committed to making this important collection more accessible to wood anatomists, botanists, foresters, and others, wherever they may be, for use in their projects, particularly in forensic timber identification, ecology, paleontology, archaeology, biodiversity, conservation biology, dendroecology, climate change studies, sustainable development, and systematics. To this end, this database contains images of the specimens and information taken from their collection labels.
Digital images of Xylarium specimens and electronic records of the data on specimen labels can never replace the physical Xylarium. However, this is the only means by which large quantities of data concerning the timbers can be made readily available and provide faster access to specimens for those concerned throughout the world. It will also safeguard the collection by providing a digital backup of the physical specimens and reduce handling and shipping costs.
